Larger veins such as varicose veins can effectively be treated with sclerotherapy by using stronger solutions such as foam preparations. This foam sclerotherapy solution is used to treat varicose veins by injecting a small volume of irritant into the vein, ultimately causing it to close up over time. Ultrasound guidance can be used for injection deeper varicose veins which cannot easily been seen on the skin surface. Oftentimes foam sclerotherapy is required to treat remaining veins after a patient receives radiofrequency ablation of the main feeder vein in the leg. Sclerotherapy procedure is performed in our beautiful oceanview procedure suites and usually takes 30-40 minutes per session. The initial treatment option for varicose veins is conservative management. This includes compression stockings, exercise, leg elevation and weight loss. These approaches may provide temporary symptom relief but will not make the varicose veins go away or prevent them from worsening, as the underlying disease process of venous reflux has not been addressed.
